Something to
Think About

In Your Heart
If there is peace in your heart, you will find it impossible to hate.

If there is honesty in your heart, you will find it impossible to judge another.

If there is love in your heart then that is all there is.

Fear is gone, as is judgment and the desire for violence.

- Kim Hauenstein,
United Protestant
Campus Ministries,
Cleveland, OH

"This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him."

1 John 4:9 (NIV 1984)

Our Savior Lutheran Youth Group - July 2013

Sunday Morning Bible Class
The OSL Youth Group meets Sunday mornings from 9:15 - 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall. Teens meet together to study God’s Word and how it applies to their lives. It is a great way to explore the tough questions about faith and life.

Don't be shy. Come and join us. We have a chair waiting here just for you! Whether you are a member or just visiting, we are glad you are here. Ask questions, join our events, share your name... we want to meet you and become friends. So, welcome! Our Savior's Youth Group strives to be a fun and safe place for all.

Youth Confirmation
Students entering 7th through 9th grades, and their parents, meet every Wednesday night, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. for Catechism classes. These classes are the first steps toward being confirmed as a member of Our Savior. If you would like to join this group or have any questions, please call the church office or the Pastor.

LCMS MI District 2014 Senior High State Youth Gathering

The event will take place at the Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island and run from June 22 to 25, 2014. The theme is built around the following Bible verse:

Matthew 5:14, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden."

Participants must be age 14 (or entering 9th grade in the fall of 2014) to age 20 (and must be affiliated with an LCMS congregation).

Registration opened in November. We already made our non-refundable group deposit. Now we have to get our individual deposits of $85 per participant in by March 1st.

The cost of the gathering is approximately $395 per person.

If you are interested in going as a participant or a volunteer, or would just like more information, please contact Youth Director Angel Roberts.

We will NOT be asking for sponsors from the congregation this time around. If a teen wants to attend the gathering, they must earn their way there. If you want to support our youth, you can put them to work (to earn funds) and keep them in your prayers.

Connecting With God Through Technology
As a mom and a youth leader, I am often reminded that I am not very "tech savvy", especially when it comes to the way you young people like to get more information on your interests.

As teenagers, your life is all about getting information (and giving information) through reading other's viewpoints and expressing your own opinions via social media, texting, tweeting, chatting, skyping and whatever else it is you do/use with your friends. I admit, I can't keep up with all the ways you teens give and get information.

I do know that the traditional way --sitting and listening to someone and carrying-on a (face-to-face) conversation-- is not a preferred method. So, please allow me to get with the times or at least attempt to act like I am a little clued in.

I found a few websites, geared toward Christian youth, that I want you to check out. Now, I don't want this to be a substitute for you coming to Sunday School or Church, but rather a conversation starter and/or a resources for you all to use to get information about God from other places, as well as, from Sunday School and Church. Let me know what you think.

Oh, and BTW, if you discover any similar sites, please feel free to share them with me.

  1. Groundwire - Is a relationship with God possible?

  2. God TV - Offers a variety of faith based programming worldwide

  3. GodVine -Is a Christian video web site that focuses on uplifting, encouraging, and inspiring you in your daily life.

Activities in 2014
In addition to our fun-filled Sunday morning Bible studies, we, as a youth group, CAN DO more things together this year than ever before!

However, to do more fun things, I, your faithful (and just) Youth Leader, need your input! I have heard suggestions for things such as, bowling, movies, bonfires, etc... These are all great suggestions! We can do all these things and more. Let's start planning them together.

Don't know how to start? Well, talk to me and your parental units about your ideas so we can start working out the details. I plan to have a parent meeting in March, so that will be a great time/place to get things on the calendar.

Youth Group On-going Fund Raisers
Youth Group T-shirts
We still have a few of our 2013 T-shirts left. We are selling these Weird T-shirts for $15 each. If you would like to buy one, please see a Youth Group member after service.

Cash for Cans
The OSL Youth Group respectfully asks that you please save your pop cans and bottles for us. We are collecting these returnables as an ongoing fund-raiser. You can bring your bags of cans and bottles to church or we would be happy to pick them up from your home. Contact Angel Roberts for more information. Thank you for your support.

JOIN THE FUN!

Youth Ushers at OSL
Our Savior teens and Sunday school kids are invited to act as ushers the Second Sunday of every month.

If you are interested in ushering, please contact the Worship Director, Dave Greeson or his assistant Sarah Roberts, for more information. We certainly appreciate all your help.

Choir & Music
New singers and musicians are always welcome to join in and participate in worship services... that includes children and teens.

Practices are held on
Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m.

Contact Debra Demming for more information.

Skits & Plays
It is getting to be that time of year again, when the OSL Sunday School Kids and the OSL Youth Group start to add special elements to the worship service. If you would like to direct a play, be an actor, or just help with music, props or background, please see Jean Shipley.

Get Involved
Did you know... If you have a child or teenager that attends Our Savior, you are invited to be on The Board of Young People's Work? It's true. We want to see you on Sundays too!

Really, EVERYONE (kids or not) is invited to join us. Come and share your thoughts and ideas about bible studies, fund raisers, events, etc... with the Director (Angel Roberts).

COLLEGE CONNECTION

Higher Learning - Higher Faith
Just because you've gone off to college --away from your home church-- doesn't mean you have to lose your faith or let it fade.

Pastor wants to share the article below with all of you new scholars.

This article is the first in a series by Dr. Paul Maier, retired professor of medieval history at Western Michigan U, past vice-president of the LCMS, uncle of our Michigan District president, and renowned apologist and expert on the Christian faith.

Part 1
Apologetics
in a University Context

BTW, if you have any questions or just want to talk to someone about this series (or anything), you can call me, Angel (The Youth Director) or Pastor.

Also, I will be publishing info about chapels and churches on or near campuses around Michigan very soon.

Blessings Brainy Ones!

NEW Youth Activities!
We’d like to invite all area children, teens and adults to share your ideas, time and talents to plan future youth activities.
